Inscription on the basin of the plate: "Il pourrait arriver qu'en cette sardinière / On servit sans façon le poisson d'un confrère / Mais pour les délicats point n'est besoin des yeux / Ils goûtent : ce n'est pas du vrai "Frères Amieux". ("It could happen that in this sardinière / A colleague's fish was served without a fuss / But for the delicate there is no need for the eyes / They taste: this is not real "Frères Amieux".)
Frères Amieux was a family-run "sardine confectioner" founded in 1866, with several factories in Brittany and the Vendée. The company won its first gold medal at the 1878 Exposition Universelle and enjoyed considerable prosperity before being bought out in 1974 by a larger group, but the name was preserved.
