Christofle is one of the most prestigious names in silverware. The company, founded in Paris in 1830, quickly became one of the most famous in the world when Napoleon III commissioned it, in 1851, a service for one hundred guests for the Tuileries Palace. This service included a magnificent silver-plated centerpiece, which can be seen in the permanent collection of the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. Other pieces can be seen at the Metropolitan Museum in New York.
